This winter has tested us all. Portugal has been weathered by storm after storm, culminating in the devastating Storm Kristin on January 28th. While many communities near us suffered immense loss, we consider ourselves fortunate; though we were without power, internet, or cell service for several days, our damage was manageable compared to the struggles of our neighbours.
Our hearts go out to the smaller villages severely damaged and still waiting for basic services to be restored. If you are looking for ways to support the recovery, we encourage you to look toward organizations like the Portuguese Red Cross or Cáritas Leiria. We have been happy to serve as a donation drop-off point, providing transportation for essential supplies to those distributing them on the front lines.
In our own groves, the winds were fierce. Dozens of our olive trees were toppled; while we hope to save some, others were simply snapped in half. As soon as the rain finally subsides, we will begin the process of repairing and replacing what was lost.
We are still open, however! We’ve been so happy to host several caravan guests lately—lovely people who brought a bit of sunshine to the grove despite the weather.
As we, and those around us, spend the coming months mending the land, remember that our region relies on your visits and support now more than ever. Whether for a tasting, a tour, or a night under the trees, we can’t wait to welcome you back.
